Abstract

This study examines the transformation of pesantren scholarly authority in the context of increasing digitalization. Traditionally, pesantren as Islamic educational institutions have maintained a well-established structure of scholarly authority grounded in turāth, chains of scholarly transmission (sanad), and hierarchical relations between kiai and santri. However, the expansion of digital media has created new spaces for the production and dissemination of religious knowledge, leading to the fragmentation and individualization of religious authority. This study employs a library research method by analyzing classical and contemporary literature on pesantren, religious authority, and digital Islam. The findings indicate that digitalization has encouraged a shift from epistemic authority toward performative authority, without entirely eroding the role of pesantren. Instead, pesantren respond to these challenges by developing hybrid forms of authority that integrate traditional scholarly legitimacy with digital engagement. This study concludes that pesantren possess adaptive capacity to sustain their scholarly authority and remain relevant within the plural and competitive landscape of digital religion.
